New way to make invisible ink visible!
In a paper recently published in the British journal Nature Communications, a team of Chinese scientists introduces a new method to visualize invisible inks based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which can be used to protect encrypted information and achieve repeated encrypt and decode.
Safely storing and protecting important information is a big challenge around the world. Invisible ink can glow or stay dim as needed, so as to achieve the purpose of encrypting and decrypting confidential information. The principle is that the luminescent properties of certain materials can be changed under the stimulation of chemicals, light or heat. However, those materials that are truly invisible in the closed state or that remain invisible all the time have not yet appeared, and most of them cannot be used repeatedly, and these points are extremely important for information encryption.
A simple chemical that triggers a reversible conversion of a colorless lead-containing compound into a light-emitting material, according to research by Li Liang and colleagues at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China. Inkjet printers print these materials on oiled paper, resulting in text and patterns that remain invisible under both visible and UV light. When the team added a salt that changed the chemical composition of the material, the modified material glowed brightly under a UV lamp. If the same salt is added again, the material switches back to its initial state, realizing multiple cycles of information encryption and decryption.
Previous invisible materials or confidential materials, although people cannot see them when they are printed or written, can be seen if they are irradiated with ultraviolet light or affected by other factors. None of the decryption methods work.
The authors suggest that the study should take into account the toxicity of lead-containing materials, but designing lead-free alternatives is now a possibility. They believe that this scheme can be used to produce new invisible inks to further meet the needs of security and confidentiality.
