Is there really a clear difference between traditional printing and digital printing? Before answering this question, let's first understand the current definition of digital printing.
1) In 2011, the former State Press and Publication Administration formulated and issued the "Digital Printing Management Measures" (referred to as "Measures"). And introduced a management approach. The administrative objects applicable to the "Measures" are the business activities of using production-type digital printing machines to engage in the printing of publications, packaging and decoration printed matters and other printed matters. The "production-type digital printing machine" mentioned in the "Measures" refers to digital printing equipment that has a relatively high printing speed, stable printing quality, and can achieve industrial continuous and mass production. But there is no definition of digital printing per se.
2) As one of the main suppliers of industrialized digital printing equipment, HP has an article on its English website that briefly introduces what digital printing is. When you print a file by reading it from your computer, your phone, or your flash drive print, that’s digital printing at work.” In short, the printed file is digital, so that’s digital printing.
3) Xerox, a production-type digital printing equipment supplier, mentioned on its English website that "digital printing is the process of directly printing digital-based graphics and text on various media substrates. It is different from offset printing and does not require printing plates. A digital file such as a PDF or desktop publishing file that can be sent directly to a digital printing press for printing on paper, photo paper, canvas, fabric, synthetics, cardstock, and other substrates." Baidu Encyclopedia and Sogou Encyclopedia describe it under the entry of "digital printing" as: digital printing refers to the digitization of printing technology, and generally refers to the digitization of part or all of the whole process. Digital printing is to print computer files directly on paper. It is a new printing method that is different from the tedious process of traditional printing. Obviously, in different categories, the definition of digital printing is also different. As far as industrial applications are concerned, it is still being perfected and matured, so it is difficult to say which definition is the absolute authority. Confined by the author's own level of knowledge, it is difficult to exhaust all research institutions and experts and scholars on digital printing. To sum up, a more common saying is that digital printing prints graphic files that have been electronically documented.
2. The dialectical relationship between traditional printing and digital printing
From the above citations, we can see that there are differences between traditional printing and digital printing, but the barriers are not clear. Taking offset printing as an example, it is a basic fact that from photolithography to computer-to-plate, traditional offset printing also prints electronically documented graphics and texts, but it differs from digital printing in terms of technological path and historical development.
